How to Answer "Why Do You Want to Work Here?" (With Examples)
Interviewers ask this to see whether you picked them or just applied everywhere. A good answer is specific, short, and ties the company's needs to what you're good at.
The 3-part answer
- Something specific about them: a product, a customer group, a goal from the job posting, or something recent from their website.
- Why it matters to you: connect it to your experience or what you want to get better at.
- What you'd bring: one skill they asked for that you have proof of.
Example: customer success role at a scheduling software companyYou build scheduling software for home-service businesses, and I spent three years running the front desk and patient scheduling at a dental office, so I know how much a bad schedule costs a small business. Since then I've been onboarding and training software customers at BrightDesk. This role puts both of those together.
Where to find the specific part in 10 minutes
- The job posting: what problems do they say this role solves?
- The company's homepage and "About" page: who are their customers?
- Their recent news or blog posts
Mistakes to avoid
- "You're a great company with great culture." It could be said about anyone.
- Talking only about what you get (salary, benefits, location).
- Reading their mission statement back to them word for word.
Keep it under a minute
Three or four sentences is plenty. Practice it out loud once so it sounds natural, not memorized.
