How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description (Without Lying)
Most resumes get skimmed for a few seconds, and many are filtered by software first. A resume written for the specific job wins both tests. Here's how to do it honestly in about 15 minutes.
1. Pull the must-haves out of the posting
Copy the job description into a note and highlight three things: the job title, the hard skills and tools named (SQL, Salesforce, forklift certification), and the outcomes they care about (reduce churn, keep projects on schedule). Requirements that appear twice, or in the first few lines, matter most.
2. Match their words where they're true for you
Applicant tracking systems and recruiters both look for the posting's language. If you did the thing, use their term for it.
The rule: change the words, never the facts. If you never used Tableau, don't write Tableau. List it as a gap you can close instead.
3. Put the most relevant proof first
Reorder bullets inside each job so the ones that match this posting come first. A recruiter skimming the top two bullets of each role should see the job's core requirements.
4. Add numbers you already know
How many customers, orders, people, dollars, or hours? Rough but honest numbers ("about 40 calls a day") beat vague claims. Don't invent precision you don't have.
5. Rewrite your summary for this role
Two lines: who you are in the employer's terms, plus your strongest matching proof. Skip "hard-working team player"; every resume says it.
6. Check what's still missing
Re-read the posting and tick off each must-have. Anything unticked is either missing from your resume (add it if it's true) or a real gap (mention how you're closing it in your cover letter).
7. Keep the format plain
Use a simple one-column layout, standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills), and no tables, text boxes, or icons for contact details. These parse cleanly in tracking systems.
Do this in 2 minutes instead of 15
Paste the job posting and your resume. Nexor rewrites your resume for that job, shows your match score and the keywords still missing, and never invents experience.
